Perfect Picture Books- Inside Your Outside
Last night I had the opportunity to do something that I don't often get to do; I had dessert with my youngest son, just the two of us. Our conversation went like this:
Me: What's your favorite color?
Z: Red
Me: What's your favorite meal?
Z: Macaroni and cheese.
Me: What's your favorite toy?
Z: Lighting McQueen
Me: What's your favorite book?
Z: Stuck
Stuck is the book I posted last week and there is nothing like finding a book your child loves and asks to have read over and over again. So, for this week's Perfect Picture Book, a fabulous series started by Susanna Hill, I've chosen another one of his favorite books. With Dr. Seuss's birthday so close, this just seems way too appropriate, and I just couldn't wait. Enjoy!
Title: Inside Your Outside
Written by:Trish Rabe
Illustrated by: Aristides Ruiz
Published by Random House, 2003
Suitable for: Ages 3 and up
Theme/Topics: Human body, health, adventure
Overview/Synopsis: From the publisher... The Cat in the Hat takes Sally and Dick for a ride through the human body where they visit the right and left sides of the brain, meet the Feletons from far off Fadin (when they stand in the sun you can see through their skin) scuba dive through the blood system, follow food and water through the digestive tract, and a whole lot more!
Activities: The publisher lists activities here. For us, we just read the book and talk about the body parts and look at bones and the heart and the brain. Total fun!
Why I Chose This Book: I have several books in this series, which is modeled after the PBS show. This is the one story that my main picture book "reader" always comes back to. The rhyming and Dr. Seuss-inspired illustrations make for a fun and educational story all about the human body. My kids are learning without even realizing it.

I really like books that teach in a fun way! I've read a LOT of Dr. Seuss but I've never seen this one. I'll look for it!
ReplyDeleteI'd not seen this before. Sounds like a fun way to explore the human body. (Interesting that we have two "inside the body" books this week!)
ReplyDeleteAnother human body book today! I haven't seen this one - will have to rectify that!
ReplyDeleteToo funny, that we both picked human body books. I love the "Cat in the Hat Learning Library" series. I haven't read the body book but we have "There's No Place Like Space!" which girls enjoy. I also like the "Cat in the Hat knows a Lot About That!" which is in Early Reader Format and ties into the TV show. I wish there were more fun educational shows/books like this.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading your review last week, I got "Stuck". My kids fell in love with it. My 6 year old came up with her own version of Stuck like story.
Darshana, so glad you picked up Stuck and liked it. It's a fun story that leaves a lot for the imagination. Would love to hear your daughter's version of Stuck.
DeleteGreat choice, Tracy! And so funny that you chose this one the same week Darshana chose See Inside Your Body! It will be great to have a couple books in this category on the list - it's an important subject and one kids are curious about. I have to tell you, after your review last week, I also got Stuck from the library - I think I'd read it before but forgotten it. It's fabulous!! So clever and funny :)
ReplyDeleteI have to check out Darshana's book. I do have another great body book for older kids and of course, the story behind why we bought it. :)
DeleteI saw Darshana's review too. You two great minds were really thinkin' alike today.
ReplyDeleteI have got to get this book, Tracy. The illustrations look fantabulous. Definitely Seuss inspired.
I'll pick this up this weekend. Hoping my bookstore has it. If not I'll order it on Amazon.
Super duper choice. *waving howdy*
Thanks Robyn, it really is a favorite in our house. And now, thanks to you, so is I'd Really Like to Eat a Child. Great suggestion!
DeleteAw, who better than Seuss to take us on a ride inside us! This looks like a hoot!
ReplyDeleteI know! Would have loved books like this when I was a kid. What a great way to learn about the body.
DeleteGreat another human body book -- but each one so very different. This books looks a little lighter for a younger age group and a lot of fun. Have noticed that we occasionally have books with simila themes. Must be the group energy! :)
ReplyDeleteThere is some great group energy, that's for sure!
DeleteTish Rabe is one of our favorites. I didn't know she had written one about the human body. "There's No Place Like Space," is a favorite, along with "There's a Map in My Lap" and "Why Oh Why Are Deserts Dry." We will find this one for sure.
ReplyDeleteDr Suess is always a win! Thank you for sharing it.
ReplyDeleteWow, guess it's time for my kids to learn about the human body...and now I have TWO books to check out! Thanks, Tracy!
ReplyDeleteJust had to tell you a cool thing that just happened -- your article about Perfect Picture Book Friday in "My Verona NJ" came up in my daily google alert about picture books! What a wonderful way to get the word out! Great article, Tracy.
ReplyDeleteBeth, this is very cool to hear! Thanks so much for telling me. It's such a great resource and I've picked up some great books from others suggestions.
DeleteI'll have to check this one out with Darshana's book. it'll be good to read them both! Thanks Tracy!
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting my blog. I have been apart from chidren's books for some time now. My kids are grown now and there are no grandchildren - not yet anyways. But maybe some day. That is what our family is missing right now ... children.
ReplyDeleteI'm a sucker for Seuss, even if it's not written by him.
ReplyDeleteI gave you a Shout-Out on my blog today, just so you know. :)
Thanks David! Loving your flash fiction piece that's up today and I can't wait to read through the rest of us new followers of your blog.
DeleteTwo body books this week. How great. I am a fan of Seuss, so I have to read this. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.
